What is the use of arachidonic acid?

    Arachidonic acid is a liquid Omega-6 essential fatty acid found in very small amounts in the human body. It’s important for the production of prostaglandins, thromboxins and leukotrienes, as well as for infant brain development. Although considered an essential fatty acid, it is not necessarily obtained from the diet because the body itself can convert linoleic acid from vegetables, nuts and plant seeds into arachidonic acid. People in developed countries are particularly vulnerable to arachidonic acid excess, which is linked to eating too much meat and eggs, especially animal parts and egg yolks, which are particularly high in this essential fatty acid.
    The main effect of arachidonic acid in the body is to stimulate inflammation. Redness and pain are the body’s normal inflammatory response to injury and to help heal. After a hard workout, this inflammatory response can help muscles adapt to stress and become stronger.
    Arachidonic acid is a precursor form of prostaglandin and thrombin, a substance that dilates blood vessels, increases clotting, regulates body temperature, helps regulate sleep during fever, and controls cervical dilation and uterine spasms in pregnant women, among other things. But be aware that while a moderate inflammatory response is good for human health, too much of it can be harmful.
    It’s the inflammatory effects of arachidonic acid that lead many nutritionists to view it as a bad fat, along with saturated and trans fats. Arachidonic acid and linoleic acid are both Omega-6 essential fatty acids. Omega 6 and Omega 3 (such as fish oil) are polyunsaturated essential fatty acids. Both types of fat are important for the body to build essential hormones. However, Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties.
    Modern diets are generally deficient in Omega-3 fatty acids, but often contain too much Omega-6. Eating too much arachidonic acid is linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, lupus, allergies and inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. Experts sometimes advise people with inflammatory diseases to avoid foods with high levels of arachidonic acid.
    Bodybuilders and professional athletes sometimes like to use supplements containing arachidonic acid because it helps promote muscle growth and increase strength. However, the use of such health supplements is recommended under the guidance of a physician.
